“Eli, please listen closely. If now, right now you tell me you wanna get out of this. I will help you. I will find some way. And we will come to terms. I’m prepared to hear your side of it. But I will help you. If you tell me now…
Because in a minute, it’s going to be too late.”

Favourite Boardwalk Empire Characters - Eli Thompson

(This is going to be a bit of a long one so bear with me here)
Eli Thompson isn’t just my favourite Boardwalk Empire character, he’s my favourite character that’s appeared on television in a long time.  There’s a lot of things I just completely love about this character, so let’s start at the beginning: the guy’s a mess. The first major issue in his life is that, despite being the sheriff, he doesn’t seem to receive much respect from anyone. He’s well aware of this, to the point that he seems to be hypersensitive about it (ie, the scene with the waiter). The second issue is that even his own brother doesn’t show him respect. There’s a stark contrast by the way Nucky treats Jimmy (who is sent off to Chicago at the first sign of trouble), to the way he treats Eli (getting close to Margaret who is well aware of what happened to her husband). But the interesting thing about this relationship is that it’s definitely not of the Scar/Mufasa type. I don’t see Eli wanting to take down Nucky so that he can be in his position, he just wants to prove that he is capable of doing exactly what Nucky is doing. This leaves us with a big pile of angst just waiting to explode on screen. But the best part about Eli is that he’s not a character who wallows around in self-pity. He tries to get what he wants in life, but he just seems to go wrong at every turn. First example: the Celtic dinner. Even though everyone mocked him about it, he still took lessons, wrote his speech, worked up the balls to say it in front of everyone… and then failed miserably, got embarrassingly drunk, and went home to throw up in the toilet (fun fact: that was when he officially became my fabourvite character, because I like ‘em classy). But that isn’t enough to stop Eli! In episode eight he once again gets his chance to show Nucky that he is totally capable of being in control of things. He’s actually doing a pretty good job at it too; giving out favours, watching porn with his bros, making sure everything on the desk looks absolutely perfect. He’s completely on top of things… until he gets shot and Nucky swoops in to inform him that he asked Jimmy to come back. So this season I’m looking forward to a big knock-out brawl between Eli and Nucky, followed by an all-out hug fest because he just really needs it.

Favourite Boardwalk Empire Characters - Mickey Doyle

I’ve seen a few people say they think Doyle’s creepy but I find him to be such an interesting character and I don’t know why he doesn’t get more recognition. He’s the classic scumbag who’s on whatever side works for him at the time, but I find him so likeable no matter what he’s doing. When we first meet Doyle he comes off as mostly goofy comic relief, but he manages to successfully screw over the D’Alessio brothers who, as he already figured out, were waiting for their chance to kill him. AND he does all of this while still maintaining that ridiculous laugh that he has in almost every situation. I’m actually pretty worried that he’s going to die this season seeing as I could only catch him on approximately one clip in all of the previews. There’s also plenty of ambiguous deaths that have been seen in the previews, and the man who he was based off of died in 1931, so the writers could technically kill him off whenever. Excuse me while I just go cry myself to sleep now.
